Studies on the biosynthesis of phospholipids in Geotrichum candidum.

The procedure follows heating the cells at 65 degree C. in methanol under reflux and extraction with methanol and chloroform in three steps. Effects sof vaious environmental factors on thelipids and the phospholipids was studied in synthetic media. The lipid cosntent was observed to increase with decreasing growth yields and : phosholipid content. In the shaken cultures, the phospholipid content was higher than that instatic cultures ofthe mold. The lipid contents ofthe cells was however, higher in static cultures than in shaken cultures. On the pH scale (4.0-8.0) maximum lipid content ofthe cells (7.1) was oberved at pH7.0and maximum phospholipid (0.75) at pH6.0 with increasisng glucoe concentrationfrom 1 percent to 10 percent at a fixed level of nitrogen supply thelipidand phospholipid cosntent increased from 4 percent and 0.616 percent to 9.0 percent and 0.774 percent resp. Maximum lipidand phospholippid productionwas observed withammonium nitrate. The phospholipid pattern was not affected by diffeent lammonium salts. Stimulation of the lipid and phospholipid
